Fig 16 Cissing caused by silicone contamination.

Contamination from silicone rubber sealants will most often be found near to fittings where the sealant has been used as a bedding compound, and on topsides areas where silicone rubber may have been used under rubbing strakes, etc.

Thorough solvent degreasing using plenty of clean cotton cloths is usually the most effective means of overcoming cissing, but is not always successful.

If contamination is very persistent, sanding the affected surface with some 800 or 1000 grit ‘wet or dry’ paper, wetted with white spirit, will usually do the trick. Silicone anti-cissing agents are available, but their use demands extreme caution, as excessive additions can often make matters worse. Moreover, any subsequent coats are even more likely to ciss, and intercoat adhesion will be reduced.

If the above treatment is unsuccessful, examine the surface closely for any minute pinholes. These are particularly common in gel coats, producing symptoms that can easily be mistaken for silicone contamination. Pinholing is discussed in greater detail here.
